Some tips from Group HSE to keep you safe during this festive season.

ROAD SAFETY

“It takes 8,460 bolts to assemble an automobile, and one nut to scatter it all over the road”

To make your road trip the best experience possible, it's important to keep safety in mind. Observe some simple safety tips and you will have many happy, safe road trips ahead of you.

1. Make sure your vehicle is in good road worthy condition

 Has gone through periodic maintenance

 All fluids are at proper levels

 Brakes in working condition

 Tyres are not worn (depth of remaining tread not less than the head of a match stick) and properly inflated (including spare tyre)

2. Plan your route

 Use GPS to your advantage especially when looking for routes, exits, toilets breaks even for getting coffee or some power naps at R&R areas

 Don’t forget to call the highway operator before hitting the road to find out where the probable bottlenecks are (PLUSLine : 1800 – 88 – 000 / East Coast Expressway : 09 – 5479 111)

 Plan appropriate stops for buka puasa, sahoor, mealtimes, toilet breaks and stretching your legs

 Have sufficient balance on your Touch and Go to avoid long queue at the toll lane

3. Don’t forget ZeTo Rules #10

 Do not use your mobile phone while driving

 Follow the speed limit

 Ensure everyone in the car use seat belt at all times

and

 Ensure your luggage and loose items are properly secured, whether they are in the trunk or back seat

“Automobiles are not ferocious.... it is man who is to be feared” Robbins B. Stoeckel

4. Follow the rules of the road

 Avoid using emergency lane

 Do not tailgate

 Leave a proper 2-second “time to react” gap under all normal circumstances, and more in bad weather

5. Ensure you have adequate sleep and rest before the journey. If you get tired, take extra breaks

 Don’t wait for another hour or two until your “scheduled” stop if you find yourself suddenly sleepy

6. Plan for emergencies

 Ensure you have tools, small fire extinguisher, torch light and emergency triangle/cone

 Get a few snacks for you and a cell phone to call for help if required

 If case of breakdown, ensure that you park at a safe location, with hazard lights on and hazard triangle/cone positioned at a safe distance.

BUT WAIT…HOW ABOUT ME? I WON’T BE DRIVING.

And for those who are taking other means of transportation, like the flights, trains and buses, follow these tips.

1. Don’t forget to keep your ticket at a place you can remember

2. Check for your departure date and place

3. Make sure you have ample time to go to place of departure

4. Book the transportation that you need to go to place of departure, days before

5. Always have your luggage close to you at all times

6. Never ask a stranger to look after your bag

TAKING CARE OF YOUR HOME WHILE BEING AWAY

A house or apartment left empty while you go on your ‘balik kampung’ trip is a tempting target for criminals. We do not want to scare you, but it's imperative that every traveler take certain key steps to keep his or her home safe and sound while celebrating Hari Raya with a peace of mind.

1. Switch off all the electrical appliances

2. Lock all windows and doors

3. Don't tip off criminals on FB, twitter and the web

4. Stop your mail and newspapers delivery to your home

5. Remove your spare keys from the old shoe

6. Stop tricking the criminals by leaving the lights 24/7

7. Notify the police on your absence period from home

EMERGENCY CONTACTS

In case of an emergency, these are the numbers you must have at bay.
